When you first get your braces on you may feel some general soreness for two to five days, particularly when eating or applying other pressure to your teeth, such as when playing an instrument. Sticking to a softer diet until the soreness subsides can help. Irritated gums, cheeks, or other areas can occur as your mouth gets used to your new hardware. If any sores do occur, start by using a warm salt water rinse to promote faster healing. To make the rinse, simply dissolve one teaspoon of table salt in eight ounces of warm water and rinse your mouth vigorously as you would with mouthwash.
If the tenderness is severe, take Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil as described on the original packaging.
